Managing Storage on Your Work Device

How to check available storage, free up space safely, and understand storage policies on company-managed devices.

Checking Available Storage

On Windows: Open Settings → System → Storage. You'll see a breakdown of what's using space — apps, temp files, other files, etc.

Safely Freeing Up Space

Run Storage Sense

Windows has a built-in cleanup tool: Settings → System → Storage → Storage Sense. Enable it to automatically delete temporary files and empty the Recycle Bin on a schedule.

Clear the Downloads folder

Downloads accumulate quickly. Review C:Users[name]Downloads and delete anything you no longer need. Move documents you want to keep to OneDrive.

Move files to OneDrive

OneDrive offers 1 TB of storage per user. Move large files (videos, archives, recordings) there and enable Files On-Demand so they don't take up local disk space.

What You Should NOT Delete

  • Files in C:Windows or C:Program Files — these are system and application files.
  • Anything in the IT agent or security software folders.
  • Files you don't recognize — contact IT if unsure.

Storage Limits on Managed Devices

IT monitors devices where free space falls below 10%. If you receive a low-storage alert, take action promptly or contact IT for assistance.
